Water Sensei Animated Info Graphic Commercial and Logo Design

This animated info graphic was created as an info graphic to inform the public and gain backing for a new product that tests the quality of water and sends notifications through an app that informs the community about the safety of the water in their area.  It would help empower people to take water safety into their own hands, save lives and prevent a situation like the one in Flint, Michigan. If the people are able to inform themselves, there is no need to wait until it’s too late for the government to prevent a catastrophe.  All the artwork in this animated infographic is originally created using a combination of Adobe Illustrator and Adobe After Effects.

Hal Tara

Hal Tara, connects the body to war, sandwiching the idea of surgery with the rhetoric of surgical bombing. In a gradual transformation, the piece becomes a satirical comment on blind patriotism and luxury at the expense of the third world. I imagined this piece at a time I was working for the city hall where a majority of the population is conservative republican. The conversations of co-workers sounded like replays of ABC and NBC news commentary, and their attitude about war was that of sports fans cheering the victory in a video game or cartoon with fantastical villains. They celebrated the 4th of July during the occupation of Iraq with even more fervor than usual. My experience of the 4th of July that summer felt much like Hal Tara.

November 2006 Hal Tara screened at the UCLA Hammer Museum in Freewaves’ 10th Biennial Film, Video & New Media Art Festival – “Too Much Freedom?”

Human Beings

Human Beings, a 16 mm black and white film, critiques patriarchal power and the current political system in the United States that are controlling media and limiting privacy. The society underneath the dome represents one with heightened security, government control over the citizens and over their media. The radio recordings that are heard in and out of static come from public radio and have largely been shut out of the mainstream media. They represent the last genuine voices making their way through the airwaves before our society is cut off from the rest of the world completely and to the reality of what our government is doing to people of other nations.

American Harem

American Harem emulates mainstream music videos in which women are objectified and very sexualized. However, it is a role reversal where men in skimpy track running shorts and uniforms play the usual role of the women. The central male figure, who is usually referred to as the “pimp” or “player” and surrounded by numerous women, is instead a Middle Eastern woman in veil attire. Through her words and performance in this role she is all empowered as the men dance for her. The aim is to playfully deconstruct preconceived notions of submissive sexuality. This suggests that perhaps there is empowerment in the modesty of Middle Eastern culture, which Western mainstream media both lacks and misrepresents.

Neighborhood

Neighborhood is a song developed into a video performance with animation. Through lyrical storytelling and visual metaphors, Neighborhood draws attention to the reality of the children who are the victims of modern warfare. It deals with the immediate and long-term devastation that results on the land that is ravaged by war. Neighborhood pays respect to the people of Iraq, attributing Mesopotamian history as their own. The associations I make between Iraq, Mesopotamia and the prophet Abraham is to give the current people in Iraq and the land where they live a certain kind of dignity that should be preserved.
